Event Details

In this class, Galen Garretson of Town Cutler will teach a basic three step process for sharpening knives at home.  This class will include a discussion of the qualities of different steels, different methods and techniques, and a demonstration with Japanese Whetstones.  This will be a demonstration only, and there is no need to bring your own knives.

Galen Garretson is the owner of Town Cutler, the Bay Area’s premier purveyor of fine knives and sharpening services, at 1005 Bush Street in San Francisco’s Nob Hill district.  Galen began his culinary career 11 years ago and tenaciously advanced through the kitchens of some of the Bay Area’s most revered restaurants under the expert tutelage of acclaimed chefs such as, Michael Tusk of Quince, the Rosenthal Brothers of Town Hall, and Tyler Florence of Wayfare Tavern.

This class has a fully refundable $10 ticket reservation fee. Details below.

Tickets for this event will be available 3/15 at 10AM

Notes about the workshop:

The $10 ticket reservation fee is fully refundable!

Show up on the day of your scheduled workshop, and check in with the girl with the clipboard (her name is Kate). She'll check your name off the list, and within 24 hours your account will be credited the full $10 ticket reservation fee in the same way you paid it online.

Alternately, you may print your ticket from eventbrite, and give it to Kate at the workshop. Either way, your account will be credited the full $10 ticket fee.

TEACH, SHARE, LEARN, MAKE (& EAT) Skill exchange workshops

Mi Piace Kate is collaborating with kitchen boutique Pot + Pantry to host a series of free skill-exchange workshops, presented by local makers, chefs, gardeners, bakers, foodies and farmers. We're enthusiastic about making things by hand, but we know handcrafting skills are often undervalued and under practiced. We hope to change that by inspiring our community to use their hands, and learn new kitchen skills in a fun, social setting.

We started this project back in August, as a way to encourage self-reliance through social skill exchange. In the fall, we launched our first workshop series and after an exciting season of workshops with local makers such as Sightglass Coffee, Town Cutler, Urban Veggie Starts, Sidesaddle Kitchen and others, we're back again to share our latest lineup of workshops.

From beer brewing, raw recipes, fermentation, preserving and urban gardening, join us and learn more through our demonstrations, tastings and good conversation at Pot + Pantry. Expect Bay Area artisans and entrepreneurs from INNA Jam, Sightglass Coffee, Namu, Almanac Beer, Red Circle Tea, Revival Bar + Kitchen, Town Cutler, plus many more.

Kate Koeppel is the designer and maker behind Skill Exchange, and her other side project, Mi Piace Kate. Kate runs a small graphic design studio, and wrote her MFA design thesis on skill exchange and the environmental, cultural and economic impact of the devaluation of self-reliance.

Pot + Pantry is a small kitchen boutique in the Mission neighborhood of San Francisco, opened by Donna Suh Wageman in Fall 2010 specializing in new and gently used kitchenware.
